Hands on activities abound in our Civil War exhibit


The Time that Changed Everything
: In our permanent signature exhibit, Murfreesboro's Civil War Era shares moving personal accounts of county residents as it traces life-changing local events during and after the Civil War. The exhibit also features hands-on components including a writing desk and diary of a local young woman, a soldier's tent, and school benches, with reproductions of period diaries, games, and textbooks. This exhibit is sponsored by the Tennessee Civil War National Heritage Area.

A stunning wall-size mural sets the stage for the Jazz Age exhibit

Entering the Modern Era: With fabulous historic photos and artifacts, Murfreesboro's Jazz Age and early twentieth-century life in RutherfordCounty comes to life, telling the stories of downtown, local industry and business, higher education, and many others in the era of Jim Crow and the Jazz Age.

Place Names of Rutherford County uncovers the history and folklore of how our community and its geographic landmarks earned their names – from Walter Hill to the Stones River, learn more about the communities across the county.
