The Heritage Center of Murfreesboro and Rutherford County opened its doors in the fall of 2006. Our mission to is tell the engaging and compelling stories of Murfreesboro and Rutherford County to visitors and residents alike, with a special focus on Murfreesboro as a Civil War battlefield and key federal occupation base.
We tell these stories through diverse exhibits, public programs, educational events, and downtown tours. The Heritage Center also serves as an orientation center directing visitors to historic and cultural sites, resources, and events throughout the county. The Heritage Center and all its events and services are free and open to the public.

Main Street’s 16th Annual JazzFest, May 4-5
Come experience Main Street’s 16th Annual JazzFest this weekend on the historic Murfreesboe square. Bring your lawn chair and enjoy the entertainment with your friends, family, and neighbors. There will be professional jazz artists and local youth jazz bands, along with great food and children’s activities.
The Heritage Center of Murfreesboro and Rutherford County is a partnership project with Main Street Murfreesboro/Rutherford County, Inc., organizers of JazzFest.

New exhibit of Historic Murfreesboro Postcards Comes to the Heritage Center
In celebration of Murfreesboro’s Bicentennial, The Heritage Center is hosting a new exhibit, “Wish You Were Here: Postcards of Murfreesboro,” that provides glimpses of the city throughout its 200-year history. The postcards featured in the exhibit are part of a collection that was donated to the MTSU Center for Historic Preservation by Mr. W. Ridley Wills II. Highlights from the exhibit include the development of the historic Public Square, the arrival of motels in Murfreesboro, the creation of the first educational institutes in the city, and the growth of Middle Tennessee State University as well as the city itself.
Legacy of Stones River Symposium Commemorates the Battle’s 150th Anniversary
“Stones River: Why the Battle Matters 150 Years Later” will take place October 26-27, 2012, at First Presbyterian Church and Stones River National Battlefield in Murfreesboro. Friday’s activities will include a teacher workshop at the Heritage Center (e-mail Kira.Duke@mtsu.edu to register) and downtown tours, which will leave from the Heritage Center at 3:00 p.m. and 4:00 p.m. Download the registration form here.
The Middle Tennessee Civil War Roundtable meets monthly at the Heritage Center for roundtable discussions and presentations on a variety of Civil War topics. For more information on the schedule, click here.

From I-24, exit 81-B, travel toward Murfreesboro to the Public Square. Go through the Square to the next traffic light at College Street, and turn left. The Heritage Center is located in the second block on the left, at the corner of College and Walnut.
